Private Sessions

I can be your core support as your Pilates instructor. One on one sessions are taught in a very private setting. Initial session includes posture evaluation, activity level review, goal setting, and fundamental Pilates skills. Each Pilates class takes you step by step to reach your goals. As your Pilates instructor I will guide you in choosing goals such as better posture, reduce inches at waist, hips, and/or thighs, toned arms, more shoulder or back flexibility.  Exercises are done on equipment and on the mat, with and without accessories (ball, bands, magic circle).

Semi Private Sessions

Semi Privates are also offer for your Pilates exercise program. Grab a friend to work out with. These sessions are for two clients at a time to exercise together. This is motivating and supportive for you, your friend and your Pilates instructor. These Pilates classes include matwork and reformer work with accessories. These accessories are mini balls, big fit balls, magic circles, stretch bands, and foam rollers. Semi Privates are a more affordable option to do Pilates in Los Angeles. Clients must find their own partner.

Each session is 55 minutes long

Expectations in a Session

Here is what to expect in each session with your Pilates instructor. This Pilates studio includes approximately 15 minutes of matwork with or without props at beginning of session followed by exercises on the equipment in a private one on one session.  Each and every client starts with some basics on the mat. Matwork duos will continue on the mat working progressively through the exercises.  Breath control is first. Practicing and focusing on inhaling and exhaling will awaken and relax the muscles preparing them for the work ahead. The breath leads to the next step which is abdominal access and engagement. Finding the abdominals and knowing how to work them with out stress is what sets Pilates apart from other forms of exercise. You will learn the most supportive way (especially for the back) to contract the abdominal muscles. These basics will be focused on during the mat exercise portion of the session. A longer amount of time may be needed in matwork to ensure proper understanding of this foundation.

Advanced Pilates Classes

The more advanced Pilates classes require upper body strength and a great deal of back and leg flexibility. Many exercises will move your body upside down and on your wrists like "snake" or "corkscrew." These are similar to doing a push up , we also have a Pilates way of doing a push up that works the triceps more (that flabby back of the arm). Some exercises will move your spine in to full extension "arching" or full flexion "rounding". "Splits" exercises are also part of the repertoire and require great hamstring and hip flexor flexibility. The emphasis in these classes will be fluid movement, (almost like a dance) faster pace, and changing spring resistances. The springs can be used when on the equipment to support your body or used minimally to challenge your core stability. In other words sometimes the lighter the springs, the harder it is to perform the exercise.

Posture Evaluation

Part of the evaluation in the first session includes analyzing what type of spine a client has. The spine will fall into 1 of 4 types. Individual people may have variations of one type.

  1. Ideal- Natural curves that are supposed to be there in upper and lower back
  2. Kyphotic/Lordotic- Excess curve in upper and lower back
  3. Sway back- Hips pushed forward and tailbone tucked under
  4. Straight- Little or now curve at all in spine

Standing Pilates

This studio proudly offers Standing Pilates as well. Physical Mind Institute has taken the standard Pilates matwork exercises and applied them to standing movement. This set of exercises are complementary to the matwork and equipment exercises, they are not for people new to Pilates. Now gravity is a factor in the movement making this system more functional and relatable to daily life. The benefits are the same as the standard exercises.
